STATEMENT

Maybe I was here before, maybe this is where I’m going is an installation in three parts, consisting of a series of vessels and a triptych of hanging panels. The pieces begin as free writings on specific events and broader circumstances across time, which are subsequently distilled into drawings and symbols. The drawings are then incorporated into the glass in several layers, using a variety of techniques to imbue thoughts and feelings into the work. The panels, representing times past, are a monument to what has come before and are fixed, as it has been written. The vessels, representing the present and that which has yet to come, serve a further purpose. Repeated meditations are whispered into the vessels before they are broken, ritualistically, to let go of what they symbolically contain.

We do not stand still; we are always moving, sometimes forward and sometimes backward.

STATEMENT

As a Zen Buddhist and a spiritual person, that has had past experiences with mental health issues, being balanced in mind, body and spirit is my goal. I have noticed lately that “this seeking balance” has been slowly creeping into my artwork and my latest series called BALANCE has brought this to fruition. These two pieces are the first in the series of ten. Each one is wood burned and painted on a wooden panel. The characters within the painting are couples maintaining these balance positions that have now become parallel to my actual life.

STATEMENT

This stool pays homage to the paper cuttings Matisse made. In using simple shapes, he was able to realize complex shapes and ideas as simple silhouettes. I pay attention to the idea of intersection in arranging these blobs and flourishes on the embroidered top of this stool.

The perceived “overlaps” calls attention to the way in which objects can share spaces by means of just intersecting. Just as in art, the practice of intersection and overlap is vital to a healthy thriving community. Especially given the joined power of collectives and the lack of space to accommodate individuals alone, I hope this piece reminds audiences of the way in which interactions contribute to the vitality of their quotidian life.

For this piece, I also chose to lay the embroidery on a stool instead of displaying it as a lone wall hanging in aim of practicality. This piece is both aesthetically intriguing and practical in any home, however large or small, eclectic or modern.
