Creative Minds – Community Zine Collab for Teens

Dates: Tuesdays, October 15 to November 19
Time: 5:30PM-7:00PM
Venue:Meridian Arts Centre, 5040 Yonge Street, North York

This interactive program will delve into the depths of drawing, printing and zine-making techniques for a fun, hands-on learning experience that will leave participants feeling accomplished and engaged. Come and learn with members from our very own community about our shared connections to the people, places and things that we enjoy, and discover fun, exciting ways to depict our story with relief-cut printing techniques.

Project Objective: Students will leave the program with one 6″ x 9″ folded zine which features six interior pages, one cover page with a title and one back cover page with all the students’ names. The zine will be printed in black ink using relief cut lino block printing techniques, where each student will make one row of comics and mix and match their rows together to create a non linear story about “shared spaces”.

Learning Objectives: In this program students will learn all the key steps needed in order to create relief-cut lino block prints. They will learn how to assemble a relief cut tool, how to properly bray ink and press prints, how to transfer a design and how to design an image for relief cut prints. They will also learn all the key steps needed in order to create a folded zine. They will learn how to prepare a sheet of paper for a zine layout, and how to cut and fold a zine out of a single sheet of paper using no glue or staples.

Building Your Artistic Voice & Financially Supporting It with Bilal Baig

Date: Saturday, November 2nd
Time: 1-3 PM (EST)
Venue: Virtual, Zoom

This is a workshop geared towards emerging artists who have questions about how to enter the next chapters of their careers with a clear sense of artistry, and how to develop different streams of income and opportunity to support the art-making process. In this workshop, Bilal will share their ideas and strategies on: deepening connection to artistic self, navigating relationships with decision-makers and producers, and getting the most out of mentorship. Participants will analyze an effective artist statement and will also be given space to ask Bilal questions in a Q&A period.
This free workshop has been created for queer and trans BIPOC artists living in North York and Toronto. If you identify outside of these intersections and would like to attend, send us an email to be placed on a waitlist and we’ll let you know if spots become available.

Thanks to a $1 million investment over four years from the Slaight Family Foundation, Workman Arts is expanding its art training programs throughout the GTA by partnering with Scarborough Arts, Urban Arts, North York Arts, East End Arts, Arts Etobicoke and Lakeshore Arts. The expanded program tackles the prevalence of social isolation in individuals with mental health issues and the lack of opportunities to build lasting social connections through meaningful engagement outside of the mainstream mental health system. Workman Arts’ art training programs are unique in the mental health sector because they do not treat the art class as secondary to the mental health benefits. High-quality art classes across all disciplines are facilitated by instructors with lived experience of mental health and/or addiction issues.

Workman Arts North York Satellite is specifically looking to add programming in North York.
