Call for Workman Arts Instructors! Deadline: Friday, June 28

Deadline: Friday, June 28 (for contracts that begin in September 2019 and end in June 2020)

Instructors will develop and teach programs, workshops and classes offered at Workman Arts as well as on units at CAMH (as part of the Art Cart program in collaboration with Gifts of Light) as well as in the greater Toronto Arts community with partner organizations (which currently include: The Liaison of Independent Filmmakers, Tangled Art + Disability, Victoria Hub in collaboration with Neighbourhood Arts Network, Trinity Square Video and more TBC).

Workman Arts provides multi-disciplinary, professional art workshops for and by artists with lived experience of mental health and/or addictions issues. Workman Arts aims to support member artists through community support, access to free studio space, materials, equipment, free art training as well as professional development and presentation opportunities.

We are looking for artists that have developed skills, technical experience, or an artistic project in a range of disciplines that may include (but are not limited to): Painting, Drawing, Printmaking, Sculpture, Textile Art, Photography, Media Arts, Filmmaking, Podcasting, Animation, Performance, Theatre, Dance, Poetry, Prose, Playwriting, Songwriting and/or Music Composition.

*Please keep in mind that programs are intended to provide participating artists with guidance and support in their own creative pursuits or the chance to contribute to a larger collaborative process (rather than be in service to an Instructor’s sole artistic vision or project). Also, please note that Workman Arts is a non-clinical arts organization and we will not prioritize applications that are situated explicitly within an art therapy and/or clinically-based framework.

What Instructors receive from Workman Arts:

  • Paid teaching opportunities (from September – June at Workman, Art Cart, and/or partner sites)
  • Instructor training and professional development
  • Community-based support from other artists who have lived experience
  • Other membership benefits (free studios, courses, presentation opportunities, etc.

What we need from you:

  • A current CV (including any teaching experience)
  • A description of your current artistic practice or interests (250 words max)
  • A description of the topics, techniques and/or projects you would like to offer including a breakdown of how the content will develop or deepen over the year (250 words max)
  • A link to your website and/or examples of your work (included in the PDF)
  • Information about training and/or experience you have in any of the following: Mental Health Advocacy, Peer Support, Harm Reduction, Recovery-Based Models, Trauma-Informed Care, Conflict Resolution, Anti-Oppressive Frameworks, Community Arts, Facilitation, Mentorship, etc.
  • Where you would like your course will be held (at Workman Arts, on CAMH units as part of Art Cart, or at a specialized venue such as an arts space, non-profit organization, or particular neighborhood).

The process:

  • Apply by the deadline (June 28, 5 PM) with a single PDF (under 10MB) to:
  • Workman Arts staff will review all applications and create a short list (by July 10)
  • The short list will be shared (anonymously) with Workman Arts members for input (by July 15)
  • Final decisions will be made by Workman Arts staff (by July 26)
  • Instructors will be informed of decisions and contracts will be provided (by Aug 1)
